Best Restaurant Delivery Services

17 December 2020

With so many restaurant delivery services to choose from it can be difficult figuring out which one has the best deals. The apps and websites all have a similar look and feel, and work in much the same way. They each offer a wide selection of restaurants ranging from fine dining to fast food, take out or delivery. But which ones offer the best deals?

Signing up is easy. All are available through iOS and Android, or accessible through your internet browser. It usually only requires your email address and a password to get you set up. You will likely get a promo code or discount on first time orders. It is important to note that these offers differ from app to app, and may change from one restaurant to another.

While these convenience services can be a real-life saver for people on the go, there are some draw backs. Service and delivery fees can really add up. Some of these companies charge as much as 40% of your subtotal in service fees on top of the delivery charge. Depending on your location, order subtotal, and when you order, you may end up paying even more. There is also some controversy over how some companies calculate tax or compensate their drivers and the restaurants. Many restaurants mark up the price of their food when ordering through these services to compensate. You can help support your local businesses and save yourself a bit of money by ordering curbside or pick up. With demand being at an all time high, delivery times are also longer in many places. Picking up your order from the restaurant helps ensure your meal is still hot (or cold) when you get it home.

DoorDash

DoorDash is one of the most popular restaurant delivery service apps. They service more than 4000 cities and feature 310,000 restaurants, most of which are in the US.

The app is user friendly and offers a wide number of options for narrowing your search results. These options can be really useful but can also be a little overwhelming. Options include factors like price, rating, delivery method, type of food, dietary restrictions and more. DoorDash also lets you see what local restaurants are popular among other users in your area. They also feature national partners like McDonald’s, Chipotle, and Chick-Fil-A.

Delivery fees range from $1.99 – $4.99 but may be higher during periods of high demand. Their service fee is usually around 15% but may be as much as 30 – 40% on orders with a subtotal less than $15.

They do have a subscription service called DashPass. It may be worth it if you order delivery regularly. For $10 a month you get free delivery from eligible restaurants. Service fees and minimum subtotals may still apply.

Uber Eats

Uber Eat’s app offers a personalized experience. They tailor your home screen content based on your previous orders and what is popular in your area. You can also sort restaurants by price, rating, delivery fee, delivery time, and dietary needs. You’ll also see which restaurants are running special offers. One of the neat features on their app is you can track your order in real time.

Uber Eats is a little cheaper on service fees. While service fees may vary from one restaurant to another, they will not exceed 15% of your order subtotal. But, like DoorDash, Uber Eats does add an extra charge for small orders. You may have to pay an extra $2-3 on orders subtotaling less than $15.

Uber Eats does not have a subscription service, but they do offer a rewards program. This reward program works with your Uber, UberX, and Uber Black accounts. For every eligible dollar spent through one of their Uber services you earn a point. Every 500 pts you unlock a new reward. Unless you use their rideshare apps, it might take a while to unlock any benefits.

Grubhub/Seamless

Gurbhub, who also owns Seamless, has apps that are similar to the others. You can filter results by food type, price, rating, delivery time and fee. Like Uber Eats and DoorDash, Grubhub and Seamless offer order tracking so you know exactly where your order is and expected delivery time. They also have a section for viewing special offers and local favorites.

Grubhub and Seamless do not charge their own delivery fees. The delivery fee for your order is set by the individual restaurants. Delivery fees are generally between $4 and $8. Seamless does not charge a fee, they pass the fee on to the restaurants. This practice has earned them some bad press in recent years.

Like DoorDash, Grubhub and Seamless have a subscription service. For $10 a month you get unlimited free delivery on orders over $12 and 10% cashback that you can use toward future orders. Grubhub also offers a variety of secure payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal.

Postmates

Postmates offers a clean and simple app interface that is easier to navigate than some of the others. You can filter results based on the same criteria offered by the other services. A nice little perk is you can also order from drug and convenience stores like Walgreens, CVS, and 7-Eleven.

Postmates has some of the highest delivery fees, ranging anywhere from $1 to $10. There is also a variable percentage-based service fee during periods of high demand. Thankfully, they offer a lot of promotions and discounts via email updates.

Like Grubhub, Postmates also offers a subscription service called Postmates Unlimited. For $10 a month or $100 for the year you get free delivery on all orders over $15 and fixed pricing even during their busy hours.
